What Food Should
My Bird Eat?
What you feed your bird is one of the most important parts of owning a feathered friend. While we are not Veterinarians or Dieticians we know a great deal of what to feed our birds. Read on to find out what your feather friends should be eating.
What you feed your bird is one of the most important things in bird care. A balanced diet filled with enrichment is key to your success. We believe all birds need a great base diet to build off of. We recommend by the size and/or species of bird, as seen below. These base diets are a great way to ensure your bird is eating what is needed to get the proper base minerals and proteins. In addition to the base diet shown below, we recommend providing a “chop” daily. We recommend a chopped diet consistent of 50% veggies, 5% fruit and 5% chopped nuts. Chop must be removed within an hour, (within 2 hours at the latest) as bacterial growth will begin very fast which can be dangerous to your bird. The chop is a great way to enrich your bird's diet to the next level.
It is not uncommon for breeders to wean baby birds onto a seed diet. It’s imperative that you transition your bird into pellets, veggies and fruits as described above. Our birds are weaned onto a seed, vegetable and pellet diet that has been developed by our Certified Avian Specialists.
Do you have a new baby bird from us? When the bird is ready to go home we recommend starting a baby bird out with a mix of 50/50 seed and pellet and eventually working your way up to a 70/30 mix of pellet to seed. The best way to offer the base diet is in a bowl with the proper ratio to seed mixed in.
